BNY
Global Head of Digital Assets

As the Global Head of Digital Assets at BNY, Caroline Butler  leads all commercial and strategic initiatives on digital assets and  tokenization at the firm with a focus on unlocking and delivering value to  clients.

In this senior leadership role, Caroline is responsible for  overseeing the global digital assets strategy and enterprise-wide solutions,  including the BNY Digital Assets Platform, a single integrated platform  bridging traditional and digital markets and offering a seamless experience  for clients to manage, safekeep and move their digital assets.

As a deep  financial markets expert and seasoned product developer, Caroline has  extensive experience overseeing the transformation of highly complex  businesses and helping clients navigate disruption, adopt new emerging  technologies, and accelerate growth. Under her leadership, BNY has been an  early mover and continued leader in the digital assets space.

Today, BNY  provides fund services for majority of digital asset exchange-traded products  in both the U.S. and Canada. Caroline believes that over the long-term,  digital assets and the technology underpinnings have the transformative  potential to solve client and market needs while also enabling market  infrastructure resiliency and inclusive economic growth.

It’s through this  lens that BNY is an active participant in public-private partnerships such as  Project Agora, which aims to enhance capital markets efficiency through  tokenized wholesale cross-border payments, and Global Layer One (GL1), which aims  to create a unified global ledger for digital assets.

She also co-chairs the  CFTC Global Markets Advisory Council’s Digital Asset Markets Subcommitte  (DAMS), which is focused on identifying and assessing key issues and policy  proposals related to digital asset markets including tokenized asset markets,  web3 and blockchain technologies, and infrastructure.

In 2024, CFTC DAMS  passed two key policy recommendations: (1) global digital assets taxonomy and  (2) tokenized collateral management. Based in New York City, Caroline serves  on the board of directors for BNY’s European bank board and the International  Securities Services Association (ISSA).

Previously, Caroline was the Global  Head of Custody Services for BNY, where she led the development of the industry’s  first digital asset custody product for traditional and digital assets from a  global systemically important bank.

Caroline’s global professional experience  spans a range of investment services and trading businesses, centered on  running and transforming businesses with expertise in equities, futures, and  options clearing, and securities services.
